character and variation
kinney block is hand-cast in concrete, and no two pieces are identical. expect natural variation in shade, surface texture, and tone from piece to piece and between production lots. minor pinholes, fine surface crazing, and slight color movement are characteristic of the material — not defects. these qualities are what give the tile depth and a hand-made surface that reads differently at every scale and in every light.
because of this, the image on this page and your sample may not exactly match the lot you receive. to achieve the most even result, we recommend ordering your full quantity at once, from a single lot, and blending pieces from multiple boxes during installation.
for a closer look at the range of variation you can expect, please refer to our tile variation guide.
ordering and overage
kinney block is sold by the square foot.
we recommend ordering 15% more than your measured area to account for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. if a specific layout or tight color consistency matters to your design, order 20–30% extra so your installer can cherry-pick pieces.
because each lot varies, we can't guarantee a color match on add-on orders. measure carefully and order your full quantity — including overage — in a single order.
samples
we strongly recommend ordering a sample before purchasing. concrete is a natural material and on-screen color is never exact. order a sample box or shop prototypes to see the tile in person.
installation
kinney block is a dimensional, heavier-profile concrete tile and should be installed by an experienced tile professional. before setting, lay out and blend all boxes so the natural variation in shade and texture is distributed evenly across the wall, and build a mock-up board to confirm your layout, grout color, and joint size in the actual lighting of the space. this dry run is the best way to preview the finished look and is a step worth not skipping.
kinney block ships unsealed. we recommend sealing to protect the tile during installation and to preserve its finish over time. the sealer you choose also shapes how the tile ultimately reads, so it's best treated as part of the conversation when you're selecting your color and planning the application — not an afterthought once it's on the wall.

care and maintenance
clean with a soft cloth or sponge and a ph-neutral cleaner. avoid acidic, alkaline, or abrasive products, which can etch or discolor concrete. wipe spills promptly. reseal periodically based on use and your installer's recommendation.
